We know we are more than perky breasts, unlined skin, or wearing size two skirts and stilettos.
We believe women become more powerful as we grow older.
The common societal narrative about older women is that a number determines who is seen and desired to be seen.
If you’re over 50, you’re labeled ugly and dismissed. And if you’re upholding current standards of beauty–being forever young– you’re honored and told, “You don’t look that old. I would have never guessed.”
Older women are either invisible, silenced, or stereotyped.
The common narrative about the older woman is that her life is complete after she’s fulfilled her reproductive obligations, reared children, supported the spouse, and if she has a job, retires from it.
If we believed the stories they sell us, older women should just keep their ugly, useless uteruses at home knitting.
The common narrative about the older woman is that she’s looking to buy anti-wrinkle serums, handbags, gray-hair care products, makeup, painkillers, and life-extending supplements.
We’re basically told to lose weight, lose wrinkles, lose our natural hair, and lose our identities by what you think we should be.
