One of my best friends said, “I wish I could be as mad as you so I could support RR.”
You might think I got mad at her, but I didn’t. Instead, I felt sadness. I mourn the women I know who have accepted poor healthcare, lack of political representation, and not having power over our bodies. I want to increase awareness about how society continues to value men over women. If this pisses you off, great. Then we can change the world together.
I See You
The truth is women make 83 cents for every dollar earned by men, 41 out of 500 women were CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, and 3% and 11% of women have received Nobel Peace Prizes or been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, respectively.
So what?
So, this.
If we continue to buy this narrative, we won’t change things, disrupt the status quo. Women comprise 50.5% of the U.S. population. That means we should see 250 women CEOs in Fortune 500 companies earning the salaries of men and induct 138 female musicians until we are even with men.
Start Believing Women Are Worthy
Dr. Z, I thought you were one of us.
I am.
I want to raise awareness about how insidious and ubiquitous women have been bought the bill of goods that we should be thankful for what we have. Society has brainwashed us to believe we are not worthy.
Do you believe that? If not, let’s disrupt these societal narratives by telling and sharing our stories of discrimination, marginalization, sexual assault, and silencing. This is the only way we are going to achieve gender equity for women by using our voices.
I’m not going to lie being a rebel can be scary. It can be hard. That’s why we need to do this together. We need to join forces, stand together, shout, and demand we are worthy of everything men are.
Take Action
Do some research. Pick any field, science, directing, ornithology (about 82% are men), or top chefs (about 75% are men). Write and tell how women can disrupt this narrative.
